The All Progressives Congress in Ogun State has unanimously endorsed Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola a.k.a known as Yayi as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

The decision was reached on Monday during a strategic caucus meeting of party leaders and stakeholders held in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, alongside key party figures including former governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, attended the meeting where the endorsement was finalised.

The move followed consultations within the party and appeals to other aspirants, particularly from Ogun West Senatorial District, to step down in the interest of unity ahead of the next election cycle.

In his acceptance speech, the senator pledged to uphold unity within the party and sustain the state’s development trajectory.

“I will not let you down, I promise to retain and maintain the unity, peace and progress that has taken place in Ogun State”,  Adeola said.

He also acknowledged the support of party leaders and the sacrifices of other aspirants, describing the moment as a collective achievement for the APC in the state.

The consensus arrangement comes amid early positioning for the 2027 general elections, with political parties across the country beginning internal alignments.

For the APC in Ogun, the decision signals an attempt to present a united front and ensure continuity after the tenure of Governor Abiodun.

Analysts say while consensus candidacy can reduce intra-party conflict, it may also test the party’s ability to manage dissent among aggrieved aspirants.

With the endorsement secured, attention is expected to shift to formal party processes and eventual ratification ahead of the governorship primaries.

The endorsement of Mr Adeola, popularly known as “Yayi,” is seen as a significant development within the APC in Ogun State, effectively narrowing the field ahead of the party’s primaries.

Party insiders say the decision reflects a broader strategy to maintain cohesion and avoid internal divisions that have historically affected electoral outcomes.

Mr Adeola currently represents Ogun West in the Senate, having previously served as senator for Lagos West and as a member of the House of Representatives. He is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

For now, Mr Adeola’s emergence marks a major milestone in Ogun’s political landscape, setting the tone for what is likely to be an intense build-up to the 2027 election.
