Nigeria has entered a new era in its oil and gas industry, emerging as a net exporter of petrol for the first time in its history, driven by rising output from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals.

Data from March 2026 shows the refinery exported 44,000 barrels per day (b/d) of gasoline, creating a surplus of about 3,000 b/d. This milestone represents a dramatic reversal for Africa’s largest crude oil producer, which has long depended on imported refined petroleum products to meet domestic demand.

Energy analysts say the development is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, ease pressure on the naira, and strengthen macroeconomic stability.

The refinery’s growing global footprint was further demonstrated with its first gasoline export to East Africa, delivering a 317,000-barrel cargo to Mozambique. Another shipment is scheduled for delivery to Beira in April, highlighting increasing regional demand as buyers diversify supply sources away from the Middle East amid ongoing disruptions.

Market intelligence firm Kpler reports that Nigeria’s gasoline imports dropped sharply to 41,000 b/d in March—the lowest level on record—while crude supply to the refinery rose to about 565,000 b/d. This marks one of the highest intake levels since the 650,000 b/d-capacity facility commenced operations in 2023, indicating strong refining activity and improved output efficiency.

Industry observers note that Nigeria’s shift from a major importer to an exporter of petrol is set to reshape fuel trade dynamics across Africa and beyond. The country is also expected to compete more aggressively in international markets, potentially adding pressure to Europe’s already saturated gasoline supply.

President of Danqgote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, attributed the refinery success to reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that improved policies have enhanced investor confidence and enabled large-scale domestic refining investments.

With declining imports, expanding export markets, and rising production capacity, the Dangote Refinery is positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global downstream petroleum sector—delivering stronger forex inflows, improved energy security, and a more strategic role in international fuel trade.
