Shares of Zenith Bank Plc, Nigeria’s most valuable bank, climbed sharply on Tuesday, rising 7.91 percent to close at an all-time high of N111. The stock rose by 7.91% to close at an all-time high of N111 on Tuesday, the most in a single day since a gain of 9 percent on February 16. This marked the largest single-day increase in a month, as investors reacted positively to the bank’s announcement of plans to list on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) by 2027.

The move to London is aimed at broadening access to capital and strengthening client services. The bank confirmed in a statement that the listing in London was part of a growth agenda to deepen its market presence and support cross-border economic activity. By positioning itself on a global exchange, Zenith Bank seeks to attract international investors while solidifying its role as a conduit for investment flows between Africa and major financial hubs.

The surge also allowed Zenith Bank to surpass Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) as Nigeria’s most capitalized bank, with a market capitalization of N4.58 trillion compared with GTCO’s N4.32 trillion. This milestone highlights growing investor confidence in Zenith Bank’s strategic direction and expansion plans.

Zenith Bank has already maintained a presence on the London Stock Exchange through its Global Depository Receipts since 2013 under the ticker ZENB.L. This provides an existing platform for international participation, making the planned full listing a natural progression. The bank will become the second Nigerian lender to list on the UK exchange, following GTCO’s listing last year, which raised $105 million.

In parallel with the listing plans, Zenith Bank inaugurated a new branch in Manchester, expanding its UK footprint beyond London. “The proposed move reflects the bank’s long-term ambition to position itself as a critical conduit for investment flows between Africa and global financial centres.” The Manchester branch is expected to create approximately 30 direct jobs and focus on corporate banking, trade finance, and treasury services, particularly for businesses operating along UK-Africa trade corridors.

Adaora Umeoji, group managing director and chief executive officer, described the Manchester expansion as a strategic step in consolidating the bank’s global ambitions. “She noted that the United Kingdom remains a pivotal financial hub, enabling Zenith to deepen client relationships, facilitate trade flows, and enhance connectivity between African and European markets.”

Zenith Bank’s dual strategy of expanding its international presence and leveraging a London listing reflects a forward-looking approach to capital growth and market influence. Analysts suggest that these developments signal increased confidence in Nigeria’s banking sector and its capacity to integrate more closely with global financial markets.
