Latest figures released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) show that Nigeria’s Internet subscriber base rose from about 154.3 million in April to 157 million in May. Globacom accounted for nearly half of the total increase, growing its subscriber base from about 15.5 million to 16.8 million subscribers.

Airtel Nigeria posted the second highest growth, adding about 1.07 million subscribers to reach 55.8 million in May, up from 54.8 million in April. MTN Nigeria recorded an increase of 382,894 subscribers, bringing its total Internet subscriber base to about 83.5 million from 83.1 million.

In contrast, T2 Mobile, formerly 9mobile, recorded no growth for the second consecutive month, with its Internet subscriber base remaining at 802,534 subscribers.

This comes almost a year after the NCC approved the operator’s national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, which was expected to improve coverage and enhance customer experience.

The latest figures suggest that while competition for Internet subscribers continues to grow, Globacom’s strong performance has further strengthened its position in the market.

Industry observers believe the company’s impressive growth reflects the impact of its ongoing network expansion and modernisation programme, which has significantly improved service quality and connectivity across the country.

As part of the project, Globacom has continued to deploy thousands of new base stations to extend coverage into new locations while increasing capacity in densely populated areas to improve both voice and data services.

The company is also expanding its fibre optic network and relocating fibre infrastructure in areas affected by major road construction projects to minimise service disruptions.

In addition, thousands of new 4G LTE sites have been rolled out this year across key cities and communities nationwide, improving network reach in both urban and rural locations. These investments are enhancing customer experience by delivering faster data speeds, wider coverage and a more reliable network for millions of subscribers.
