The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Area Command, has directed its officers to intensify revenue collection efforts, strengthen anti-smuggling operations, and ensure faster cargo clearance at the nation’s busiest seaport.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, gave the directive during the Command’s monthly parade held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at the Apapa Command headquarters in Lagos.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Isah Sulaiman, Oshoba stressed the need for officers to block revenue leakages across all terminals while improving trade facilitation and operational efficiency.
He warned officers against unnecessary delays in cargo processing, particularly at exit points within the port.
“Officers must protect the reputation of the Service. Any delay by any officer concerning any consignment will not be tolerated, even at the gates,” Oshoba stated.
“If a consignment is duly exited, there should be no delay at the gates,” he added.
The CAC urged personnel to remain professional and accessible in their interactions with stakeholders, cautioning against actions capable of damaging the image of the Nigeria Customs Service or slowing reforms introduced by the Comptroller-General of Customs and the management team.
“We should not be seen as slugs in the wheels of progress,” he said.
Oshoba also charged officers to maintain strict vigilance against smuggling activities, especially the illegal importation of illicit drugs and prohibited goods through the ports.
He emphasized the importance of discipline, warning against misconduct, unprofessional behavior, and improper dressing among personnel.
As part of efforts to encourage excellence and dedication, the Command honoured outstanding officers and terminals for exceptional performance during the month.
Assistant Comptroller of Customs Ismail Mohammed was named the Most Outstanding Officer of the Month, while CSC Augustine Ondoma, ASCI Bukola Olaleye, and IC Olalekan Salawu received recognition for professionalism, innovation, and punctuality respectively.
In the terminal category, APM Terminal received the Excellence Award on Enforcement, while ECO SUPPORT Terminal emerged winner of the Excellence Award on Revenue Generation.
According to Oshoba, the recognition initiative is aimed at promoting professionalism, hard work, healthy competition, and operational excellence within the Command.
