The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, AIG Margret Ochalla, has ordered an investigation into allegations of extortion and human rights abuse leveled against some of her officers.

The allegations surfaced in a viral post on Oni Foto’s Facebook page and were amplified by the Take It Back movement on Twitter. The victim claimed he was assaulted by officers on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Unity Estate, Egbeda, Lagos, and that his wife was tear gassed during the incident. He further alleged that the officers extorted ₦2 million from him.

The victim subsequently called on the Inspector-General of Police, the AIG in charge of FCID Annex Alagbon, as well as the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, to intervene in the matter.

Reacting to the reports, AIG Ochalla said she had taken personal charge of the case to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. She assured the victim and the public that the officers mentioned—including one identified as Officer Kalu—would be subjected to internal disciplinary processes and, if found guilty, sanctioned in accordance with the law.

“I came across the allegations of extortion and human rights violations against some of our personnel. Please accept our sincere apologies for the experience you may have encountered. Kindly be assured that the matter will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will be taken against any officer found culpable,” she stated.

She also pledged that efforts would be made to recover any funds that were extorted from the victim.

Reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, the AIG encouraged Nigerians to make use of the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) via its social media platforms or through direct phone contact to report cases without necessarily visiting a police station.

To further underscore her personal interest in the case, she asked the victim to reach her directly, sharing her personal phone line for communication.

“We remain committed to professionalism, accountability, and justice. The Police will not shield any officer found guilty of misconduct,” she added.
