A fatal multiple-vehicle crash involving articulated trucks occurred on Friday 23rd January, 2025 at Otedola Bridge, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the death of a trailer driver and severe disruption to traffic flow.

The accident which involved a collision between two heavy-duty trailers—one conveying sand and the other granite—was reportedly caused by a dispute over right of way.

Although the driver of the sand-laden trailer who was trapped in the wreckage succumbed to his injuries, he was however brought out from the wreckage.

The Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Rescue Team, who were on routine patrol, promptly swung into action as they coordinated the extraction of the victim who was handed over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and later taken to the General Hospital, Ikeja, before he was pronounced dead.

However, the driver of the second trailer was rescued alive and sustained no injuries.

Further compounding the situation, another trailer fully loaded with flour reportedly overturned about 50 metres from the initial crash site, which worsened the congestion along the corridor.

Security personnel from the Alausa Police Division were mobilized to the scene to maintain order, provide security, and support rescue and recovery operations.

The combined incidents blocked nearly 80 per cent of the carriageway, forcing traffic authorities to implement extensive diversion measures. Motorists heading into Lagos from the Mowe, Kara Bridge and Redemption Camp axis were diverted through the Ojodu–Olole route, linking Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat and 7-Up, to ease movement towards Gbagada and Ojota.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, while speaking on the incident described the crashes as unfortunate and largely avoidable, attributing them to impatience, indiscipline and failure to observe right of way.

He stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations and mutual courtesy among motorists—especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles—are critical to preventing needless loss of lives.

Hon. Giwa also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased driver and commended LASTMA, LASAMBUS and security agencies for their swift and professional response.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to road safety and urged all motorists to drive responsibly in order to protect lives and property across the state.
