The Lagos State Government has issued a stop-work notice on a six-storey building under construction at 28 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island.

The Lagos State Safety Commission cited violations of safety standards and potential threats to lives and property as reasons for the stoppage.

It was gathered that residents of the  area had flooded the relevant state agencies with letters, complaining that construction activities on the building were causing damage to nearby properties and vehicles, while endangering pedestrians.

Residents reported that boulders and planks had fallen into surrounding compounds, damaging walls, windows, ceilings, cars, and expressed fears that the debris could seriously injure or even kill people.

In a statement, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the state Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, said that a follow-up investigation was conducted on September 11, 2025, after an initial abatement notice served on the contractors was ignored.

He said the preliminary investigation revealed that safety infractions had not been rectified and that the contractors failed to comply with the commission’s directive to report within 48 hours.

As a result, contravention and stop-work notices were served, giving the contractors a 48-hour moratorium to report to the commission.

The project engineer, Otunba Ayeni, was said to have claimed that work on the site had been completed.

However, the commission maintained that all previous safety infractions and requirements for proper documentation before project commencement had been ignored.

Residents are saying that the property is owned by a prominent traditional ruler from the South-West, though his identity was not disclosed.
