The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its warning strike two days after its commencement.

Tope Osundara, the president of the association, told TheCable on Sunday that the doctors will resume work immediately.“The strike has been suspended,” Osundara said in a telephone conversation.

“Some of our demands have been met. The government has promised to look into other issues.

“We did this as a sign of goodwill and to assist Nigerians who are seeking healthcare in our various facilities.”

Osundara told TheCable that resident doctors will review the government’s response to their other demands.

He said the demands “not yet seeking immediate attention” include unpaid arrears and the downgrading of membership certificates from the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

The NARD president said the other demands are manpower shortage and the immediate release of the corrected circular on remuneration for doctors from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

The doctors had announced the warning strike on Friday, a development that crippled the operations of federal hospitals across the country.
