Family, friends, colleagues business partners and well wishers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1st, 3rd and 5th December, 2025 gathered at The Harbour Point Event Centre Victoria Island and Our Saviour’s Church TBS; to pay their last respects to the late Olusegun Awolowo Jr. during a night of tribute, wake keep and a funeral Service; to bid farewell to the first grandchild of the late sage – Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The Harbour Point Event Centre was a Mecca of sorts on the 1st of December, as it was filled to capacity with the high and mighty in Nigeria in attendance , as they pay their tribute to the first grand-son of the great nationalist.
Indeed it was a time to celebrate the iconic legacy of a man whose commitment and contribution to his family and the nation will forever remain indelible in the memory of the people.
Different high profile figures took their time to pay homage to him at the night of tribute.
Some of them were: The Deputy Governor of Lagos State- Mr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Tony Elumelu, Fomer Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment who was also The Former Governor of Ekiti State-Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo and Senator Florence Ita-Giwa among others.
The wake keep took place at the same venue on the 3rd of December with different people coming to give him their last respect. The businessman Alhaji Aliko Dangote was among those who attended the wake keep.
The funeral service for the late Olusegun Awolowo Jr. was held at Our Saviour’s Church Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos on the 5th of December with top government officials and the crème de la crème of the society established their presence.
The Diocesan Bishop of Lagos in The Anglican Communion-The Rt. Revd. Ifedola Senasu Gabriel Okupevi led the officiating priests at the funeral which included: The Ven. Folorunso OreOluwa Agbelusi- Vicar & Archdeacon of Ikoyi, The Revd. Uchenna Nwanonyoba, The Revd. Akintunde Idowu, The Revd. Canon Asoliye Douglas-West and The Ven. Bola Osinupebi who served as members of the clergy.
The officiating priests while praying for the wife, children, grandchildren and extended familiy members prayed for God’s Mercy on the deceased, with the consolation that heaven has gained him.
There was also a special moment for his old school mates (Igbobi .College Old School Association), his ancestral home-Ikenne , Awolowo Family to sing their anthems.
Later, Government Officials, Family members and some other distinguished personalities took their time to pay tribute to him.
The President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria-Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was ably represented at the event by his Chief of Staff- Femi Gbajabiamila eulogized the sterling qualities of The former Executive Director of The Nigerian Export Promotion Council.
While describing his death as unfortunate and a tragic loss to the entire country, he noted that the deceased distinguished himself as a scion of The Awolowo Family.
In the same vein, The Senate President- Godswill Akpabio also consoled the family that he left behind with words of encouragement.
Also, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos who comforted his wife, children and his extended families described him as someone who carried his family’s prominent legacy with grace.
Similarly, The Governor of Ogun State-Dapo Abiodun and other prominent personalities were there, to encourage the family he left behind. They all gave testimonies of how Segun Awolowo Jr. touched people’s lives in an impactful way.
His children also spoke about the wonderful moments that he had with them. To them, he was the best dad ever, a family man, who never joked with their needs.

Senate President-Senator Bukola Saraki and his wife Toyin, Senator Gbenga Daniel, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Fmr. Governor of Delta State- James Onanefe Ibori, Fmr. Federal Inland Revenue Service Boss- Babatunde Fowler, Fmr. Governor of Ogun State- Senator Gbenga Daniel, The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment-Mrs Jumoke Oduwole, Senator Olamilekan Solomon (Yayi) and Senator Tokunbo Abiru.
Other distinguished guests were: Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Nigeria’s Business Icon and Fashion Patron – Hajia Bola Muinat Shagaya (MON), Honourable Kayode Oladele-Acting Executive Chairman, Federal Character, Madam Alero, Mrs Adetutu Badiru, Rissi Razaq-Igue, Pastor (Mrs) Kemi Onalaja, Sanusi Adeniyi, Mrs Tosin Bakare, Dupe Roth Benson, The Nigerian lawyer, speaker and activist, who is also the founder of Arise Women Conference (a faith-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for women empowerment and Handmaidens Women in Leadership Series ) – Siju Iluyomade and Morayo Awolowo along with all the other Awolowo family members as well as numerous extended families from Ghana among others.
Also, The Chief Executive Officer of GCA Energy, Chief Greg Uanseru, The MD/CEO of Eleganza Group- Folashade Okoya and The Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG)- Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin were among those that earlier came to pay their tribute to the Scion of The Awolowo Lineage during the night of tribute.
Recall that the late Olusegun Awolowo Jr. who was born on the 27th of September 1963 and died on the 20th of November, 2025 was The Executive Director/CEO of The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEOC) from 2013-2021 under Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari .
He was the visionary architect of the Zero Oil Plan (the acclaimed national strategy to diversify Nigeria’s Economy beyond Oil), who was also a foundation pillar of The Federal Government’s ERGP.
Olusegun Awolowo Jr. LLB. B.L -The grandson of the late Revered Statesman; Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Mama H. I.D Awolowo , was the only child of late Olusegun Awolowo Sr. and Hajia Abah Folawiyo who is widely regarded regarded as a Great Fashion Icon.
