The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), has announced the partial closure of private and commercial jetties and terminals along the Five Cowries Creek to facilitate the hosting of the E1 Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing tournament.
The closures, which will affect ferry operators, passengers, and waterways stakeholders, are expected to run from Thursday, October 2, to Sunday, October 5, 2025.
In a statement signed by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, the schedule of closures is as follows:
- Thursday, October 2, 2025 – Partial closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel between 10am and 6pm
- Friday, October 3, 2025 – Total closure from Oriental Hotel to Mekwen Bridge between 10am and 6pm
- Saturday, October 4 & Sunday, October 5, 2025 – Total closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel between 8am and 6pm daily
“Normal ferry and water transport operations will resume on Monday, October 6, 2025” the statement added.
LASWA also emphasized that the restrictions are critical safety and security measures to ensure seamless event operations and the protection of lives during the Lagos leg of the E1 Championship. The authority noted that the event would showcase Lagos as a global destination for innovative sports tourism and international championships.
The Lagos State Government however urged commuters and ferry operators to use alternative routes and make necessary travel arrangements ahead of the closures.
“The patience and cooperation of waterway users will help Lagos successfully host this historic event and project our city as a world-class hub for international sporting competitions,” LASWA stated.
The E1 Championship will bring together elite teams competing with cutting-edge all-electric powerboats, further cementing Lagos’ place on the map of sustainable sports innovation.
