The Ogun State Government has urged former Governor Gbenga Daniel to submit building approvals and other documents for his private residence and hotel properties in Sagamu, following a demolition notice issued last week.

Commissioner for Urban and Regional Planning, Tpl. Tunji Odunlami, stated this on Monday, during a press conference held in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

Recall that Gbenga Daniel’s Media Aide also had a press conference in the morning, concerning the matter, where he alleged that Abiodun’s move for the demolition of Daniel’s property is an attempt to create chaos in the state.

Oliyide during the press conference also posited that if truly Governor Abiodun wanted to do a land audit as claimed, why the exemption of his house in Iperu, despite it being built on the main road.

The controversy began when the Ogun State government pasted notices of contravention, quit, and demolition threats on Daniel’s properties, including Asoludero Court and Conference Hotels Limited.

Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, however, condemned the action as “political vendetta” and “malicious abuse of power,” arguing that the properties were built before the 2022 Urban and Regional Planning Law was enacted.

The government maintains that the demolition notice is part of a routine urban renewal exercise aimed at auditing existing developments within GRAs.

Speaking further at the press conference, Tpl Odunlami stated that the government is conducting a holistic development approach across the state, including urban renewal efforts in Government Reserved Areas (GRAs) like Sagamu.

The government said the initiative involves the auditing of existing developments within these areas to determine the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals, and other commercial buildings.

It said it is a statutory and due process requirement 6 provide information for any government intervention, saying, “this informed the development audit exercise currently being carried out simultaneously both in Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu GRAs.”
