BREAKING: Dangote Refinery Increases Petrol Price

byProsper—August 08, 20250

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, to ₦850 per litre.

The increment comes after the refinery resumed sales following a one-week suspension.

The new price, up from ₦820, shows a 3.66 per cent increase and has raised concerns over a possible rise in pump prices nationwide.

Operations resumed on Thursday at the 650,000-barrels-per-day facility in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, after the pause that unsettled the downstream market.

The refinery had earlier instructed marketers to halt all payments for PMS loading until further notice.

Although the refinery is yet to announce the increase officially, industry insiders linked the price change to fluctuations in global crude oil costs, with Dangote importing around half of its crude feedstock from the United States.

While petrol prices at major private depots have remained largely stable, diesel from the refinery is still selling at ₦990 per litre, lower than the average ₦1,030 in other depots.

Despite being commissioned in 2023 to reduce reliance on imports, new data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority shows that 71.38 per cent of Nigeria’s petrol supply in May and June 2025 still came from imports, with Dangote providing only 28.62 per cent.
